Spackman's Software

The software available here is mostly stuff that I managed and Claude wrote. I can do some simple coding, but not at anything approaching a pro level. Claude, however, can code. Whether it is pro-level or not, I do not know. It is certainly well above my level.

Most of the programs here are written in Rust, which is intended to be much more secure than older languages such as C and C++. I've never learned Rust, so depend on Claude for everything. The Rust programs are licensed CC0, aka public domain, because right now, in 2026, AI-created code is not copyrightable — except NeoFlux, which is MIT or Apache-2.0, as its page says.

I have learned some Python and I know a fair amount of bash. The Python and bash scripts here are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike (CC BY-SA) license OR a GNU GPL license. The page or tarball will have the specifics.

Binaries are built on Gentoo Linux (glibc 2.43) and may not work on a distribution with an older glibc. Every program also comes as source; the tarballs build with the distribution's own Rust (Debian 13's rustc 1.85 is the floor).

  A suite of 23 Fluxbox and NeoFlux slit dockapps written in Rust, styled after Window Maker dockapps: clock, weather, moon, sun, Earth, solar system, CPU, network, battery, mail, pager, launcher, timer, volume, clipboard manager, webcam tiles and more, plus fluxData, a daemon that fetches data for some of the others, and flux-web, a browser version of some of them.

  New in October 2026: fluxVolume, any tile size from 64 to 1024 px, keyboard focus for NeoFlux's focus-slit, and a suite tarball with a build-and-install script.

  A window manager for X11 in the spirit of Fluxbox, written in Rust with no C libraries on the X path: window grouping with tabs, up to four slits for Window Maker-style dockapps, Emacs-style chord keybindings, multi-monitor workspaces, and TOML configuration. Comes with nfmc, the same window manager under a television profile, nfmc-pad (game pad to keyboard), and converters for Fluxbox configs and XDG menus. MIT or Apache-2.0.

Command Line

• fimgdupes v0.2.0 · 2026-10-23

  Find visually similar images from the command line. Matching is two-stage: a perceptual hash (pHash) compares what the pictures look like, not their names or metadata, then a thumbnail correlation score confirms each candidate, so it catches duplicates across resolutions, crops, quality levels and formats with fewer false matches. Applies EXIF orientation first, caches hashes and SHA-256 checksums, groups matches under a head file, and can list, move, trash or delete the matches, or run a command on them. --exact finds byte-identical copies without decoding, --query looks one image up against a collection, and --fdupes prints fdupes-style groups for other tools. Rust; long-form flags only; composes with the usual Unix tools.

• dvdmap + dvd2mkv v0.4.0 · 2026-10-23

  dvdmap (C, libdvdnav) maps a DVD or a vobcopy --mirror directory to its titles by walking the disc menus: every button on every reachable menu is pressed and the title it plays is recorded, so episode order comes from the disc, not guesswork. dvd2mkv (bash, HandBrakeCLI) then encodes a season of rips to one named, tagged MKV per episode, from a titles file or --name, with a --movie mode for films and a --chapters mode for discs that put a whole season into one long title. Shows its plan before doing anything. CC0.

• fluxbox-menugen.py 2026-02

  Generate a categorized Fluxbox root menu from the system's .desktop files, with icons, your choice of terminal and editor, optional extra directories, backups of the old menu, and a dry run. Python 3, no dependencies beyond the standard library. Run it with --help for the options.

• polaroid-montage.py 2026-10-23

  Turn a folder of photos into a wallpaper or printable sheet of Polaroid-style prints with captions on a themed background. Picks photos by name, date, random, or evenly spread across a timeline; suggests a grid from the photo shapes; sizes for 1080p, 1440p, ultrawide or letter paper. Can crop every photo to one uniform frame, fill leftover grid slots, caption prints with their EXIF dates, set the output quality, and build the tiles in parallel. Python 3 and ImageMagick 7 (magick).
