Quick start
- Set up a goal: a student code, the goal in your words, and the words to probe from. Paste them from Copy word list on Blending Practice, Word List Builder or Syllable Practice (or press Send to Progress Monitor there, which opens this page with the words ready), or type your own. Press Save goal.
- Run the probe. The student reads each word off the screen; you press → for correct, ← for incorrect, S for self-corrected, Backspace to undo. The score stays hidden until the end.
- Record: every finished probe is saved here with its date, score and missed words, plus the “3 of 4” check and a chart. Export a CSV or save everything to a file.
Prefer paper? Print this probe gives a student page and a scoring sheet; type the score in afterwards under Record.
How Progress Monitor works
Many reading goals read like “will decode CVC words with 90% accuracy in 3 of 4 attempts”. This page runs that measurement. A probe is a fixed number of words from one skill, shown plain, with no sound boxes or other supports, so the score measures decoding and nothing else. Each probe is one attempt.
Set up
- Student code: initials or a code you will recognise, not a full name. The record lives in this browser and in any file you save, so keep names out of it.
- Words: one per line, or separated by spaces or commas. Letters, apostrophes and hyphens only; anything else is left out and named. Up to 500 words. The three word pages above each have a Send to Progress Monitor button that opens this page with their current words, and a Copy word list button whose output pastes straight in. Sent words never replace anything here until you choose New goal or Replace in the notice they arrive with.
- Probe length: how many words each attempt uses (10 or 20 is usual). Form picks which words: the same form on the same list always gives the same words in the same order, so form A can be repeated or printed again, and Next form gives a parallel form from the same list.
- Criterion: the accuracy and the “3 of 4” the goal states. Self-corrections count as correct is on by default; untick it if the goal says otherwise. Timed records seconds and works out correct words per minute.
Run
- Press Start. The page hides everything but the word. Score with the buttons or the keys: → / C correct, ← / X incorrect, S self-corrected, Backspace undo the last mark, Esc stop without saving.
- The running score is hidden from the student unless you tick Show running score.
- When the last word is marked, the attempt is saved at once and the result card shows the score, whether it met the criterion, and the words missed or self-corrected. Add a note if you like; it saves as you type.
Record
- Filter by student and goal. The status line checks the last attempts against the criterion (for “3 of 4”, the last four). The chart plots accuracy with the criterion as a dashed line.
- Record a paper probe adds an attempt you scored on paper.
- CSV exports the rows shown. Save to a file writes every goal and attempt to a .json file; Open a saved file can add its contents to what is here or replace everything, and tells you what it could not read.
- Deleting a goal keeps its attempts; deleting an attempt asks first.
Where the data lives
Only in this browser, on this computer, until you save a file. Nothing is sent anywhere. On a shared computer, save a file and use Clear everything when you are done. If the browser cannot save (storage off or full) the page says so and the work lasts only until you close the tab.

Where to get words: Copy word list on Blending Practice (CVC, blends, digraphs, glued sounds), Word List Builder (filtered by taught sounds and patterns) or Syllable Practice (-le, magic e, vowel teams and other syllable types; the breaks are stripped here).
